In Nov. 1800, John Adams lost the election to Thomas Jefferson, thus becoming the first "lame-duck" president. On Dec. 15, 1800, Chief Justice John Ellsworth resigned. Adams offered the nomination to John Jay (coincidentally the first CJ), who declined. Adams then nominated John Ma …

First Read: Viewing Politics Through America's Starkest Divide
Mon Jun 29, 2015
The rural-urban divide in the U.S. is very significant. I grew up in a rural area, and am quite familiar with the rural inferiority complex that infects rural education, religion, economics, and politics. Rural residents believe they have been and are being marginalized--and to some …
Paul says Bill Clinton 'predatory' behavior undercuts Democrats' 'War on Women' rhetoric
Sun Jan 26, 2014
What I can't figure out is why anyone listens to this guy. Not only that, some people used to pay him to doctor their eyes. Even though he wasn't qualified to be an eye doc.
Political stars to watch in 2014
Thu Dec 26, 2013
We don't need political "stars." Can you imagine the newspapers of the day referring to Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, or Lincoln as "stars?" Or Wilson, FDR, or Truman? This is corruption of our political system by media "journalists" who are obsessed with Hollywood, who don't understan …

Fri Nov 15, 2013

First Thoughts: A reality check on 2016
Tue Nov 12, 2013
"Political" reporters who work for the media--be it MSM or alternative media--universally focus on the horse race and ignore policy. Why? Because horse races are fun and policy analysis is work. Horse races are pretty easy to understand--policy requires research and careful parsing. And most viewers …
It's Election Day: From N.J. to Va., what contests to watch
Tue Nov 5, 2013
I find it very difficult to believe that the "independent" voters of Virginia are split between Cuccinelli and McAuliffe. McAuliffe is no bargain, but Cuccinelli is not a serious person. His positions are extreme even for a Republican.
GAO: Some security guards at federal facilities not trained for 'shooter' incidents
Wed Oct 30, 2013
Wait! Private security guards are not adequately trained? I'm shocked, truly shocked at this revelation. Are you seriously telling me that private beltway bandit security guards are not properly trained? Next you'll be telling me that pre-9/11 security guards at airports were not adequately trained. …
Former Congressman Ike Skelton dead at 81
Mon Oct 28, 2013
After WWII, Harry Truman tried to get the "Do-Nothing Congress" to pass a national service requirement. That would have been a good thing. The demise of the draft has contributed substantially to the growing differences between the military and the civilian population.
